I like to watch and Inconvenient Truth at least 4 times a year so it stays top of mind.

I would encourage you to do the same. Just because there are other things in the news and other things to take your attention off of the climate crisis -- do what you can to keep it on top of your mind and in your thoughts each day.

I have met people who do not believe that there is any truth to humans having an impact on our planet, on CO2 levels.

So many exciting things going on at Laura James Designs! I have many gorgeous pendants just waiting to find the right admirer and some very interesting wall pieces that I'm really proud of.

I've just got some new glass and am about to embark on some very different new work so that's always very thrilling.

This weekend my best friend is getting married and I've been making the bridesmaids jewelry and that has been such a fun experience. For a long time now I've been wanting to do beaded necklaces with my glass pendants but I never seem to find the time, and now I have the perfect excuse to whip some up. They look so good I can't wait to make some more -- however, I did forget how much TIME it takes to bead!!!

As I'm sure you've heard by now, we're in the midst of economic turmoil. And while we are all looking at our spending in a more frugal way, I urge you to remember to buy local and support the arts! Of course you need bread and eggs and all those necessities, but you also need to laugh and have fun and enjoy LIFE!

I posted about this earlier...so in case you missed it, The Cody Rivers show will be in Portland this weekend and I'm really excited to see them. Not only are they uniquely hilarious, but I also get to feel good about supporting local theater. They are also on tour, so if they're coming to your town, then be sure to see them -- you'll be glad you did, I promise.

The economy got you down? The news is all doom and gloom these days. We're in big trouble without a doubt, but there are a few ways you can save money and still do good things. Even though things are tight, and the scent of fear is in the air, don't let that stop you from checking out the great bargains at Goodwill. Goodwill is a twofer, you get great bargains and you help a great company.

So when you want some retail therapy and can't justify a big blow out, check out your local Goodwill or other 2nd hand shops. You might just be surprised at all the treasures you will find!

Wow! It's mid-February and already time if FLYING by!

The blog posts have been sparse for a few reasons...the main one being that I have been very sick for weeks and haven't had the energy to write anything and the other reason is that I joined Facebook and that has been the most fun time sucking social networking extravaganza ever! I have found my college friends, my high school friends, random friends that I had along the way from here and there! Facebook is totally RAD!

But I digress...

One of my new year's resolutions is to be more social. Last year I worked about a 100 hours a week on average and really let my social life wither and die, but no more!

I've taken action. I've created a social event on the 1st and 3rd Monday's of the month to gather my friends and invite my friends to bring their friends and so on and so on. So far it's been a lot of fun. I've met a few new people and they in turn have met new people! Rad.

whidbey island trunk show

I love doing trunk shows! I think it's my favorite way to sell my work. Trunk shows are generally in someone's home, so it feels more casual and more social than an official "sale".

My dearest and oldest friend in the world Amanda was the awesome hostess and invited her friends over. Her friends all brought some scrumptious breakfast/morning treat and we all had mimosa's!

We had a chance to visit, there was some buying/selling, we ate and drank and all in all it was a great day and a really fun experience.

Trunk shows are the way to go!!! Thanks Amanda for an AWESOME day!!!

tip tuesday - the resolutions

Oh those pesky resolutions. I'm starting to feel like I'm resolving to do the same thing year after year after year. This year, I've resolved to do it differently. I am excited to check those resolutions off my list and create a whole new list for next year!

So, how do you really kick those goals in the ass and take names???

First of all, the goal needs to be realistic. By realistic, I mean it has to be in the realm of possibilities for you. Then, break it down into what I like to call, "do-able chunks". Make sure you make them measurable so you can see (and celebrate) your success. Create a time-line for those do-able chunks and then tell a (supportive) friend or two. Ask those friends to hold you accountable and tell them when you want them to check in with you about it.

Let's face it, it's easy to get sidetracked and let the months blow by and before you know it, it's time to make those resolutions all over again. This year, do things differently!

So stop thinking about it, and take action and before you know it, you're off and running.

Good luck! You can do it!

I'm excited to embark on a new year. When I unwrap my new calendar, I'm always a little giddy, and on a fresh page I write down my goals for this year. A whole new set of unknown opportunities are right around the corner. I love the feeling.

One of my major personal goals this year is to be flexible. I want to be ready for anything and not get my nose too bent out of shape over the small stuff.

So, welcome 2009, it's going to be an interesting year so hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

tip tuesday - do what you can

It's easy to get overwhelmed with Thanksgiving moments away and Christmas hot on it's heels. A great tip for getting things done and not feeling overwhelmed is to break down all the big stuff into small doable chunks.

I try to do a few things every day that help me get closer to the stuff I HAVE to do, that way as the deadline approaches I feel like I've made at least a little bit of progress.

Another great tip is to think from the end. Take a moment and visualize what the end of the project or goal looks like, then work backwards. Make a list moving backwards through what needs to get done to make it happen and then take into consideration how much time you have to get it done and voila! you're on your way to success.

tip tuesday - tell a friend

I'm sure you've heard the buzz word "networking" and you either already think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or you haven't experienced the brilliance that is networking!

I don't love the events billed as "networking" although they do serve their purpose and some great connections can come from there. I prefer the friends network.

My friend Kristin is the best networker I have ever met. I am always inspired by her enthusiasm and her willingness to connect me with someone who might have some insight or knowledge about what I'm doing or working on. I try to emulate Kristin and when someone mentions that they are going to do this or that I immediately try to connect them with someone that could help out.

Kristin is also a believer...a believer in your dreams, in your plans, and in your success!

So share your dreams and goals with your friends and ask them if they know anyone that might be able to help. You'll be amazed at who your friends know!

I love the Oregon Food Bank and often donate food and money whenever I can, but I've decided to get more involved this year and am volunteering my time repackaging food.

I am also donating 10% of all my sales this month to the Oregon Food Bank.

While I have (and am totally in love with) my Blackberry for keeping my calendar and addresses and all that good stuff, I've come to rely on my Moleskine weekly calendar with notes. It's small and fits nicely in my bag, and sometimes I just need to thumb through the weeks, look at them on paper and write things down.

At Powell's the other day I saw my special calendar and am so excited to tear off the wrapper and start planning and plotting my 2009.

So for those of you who would like to be more organized next year, find a calendar system that works for you and start getting it ready before 2009!

one of my favorite things

Last time we were in Athens we stumbled upon this awesome glass statue. So this time we had to go back and get some better photos. It's funny because in my memory this statue was 10 stories high, and when we found it again this time, it was so much smaller than it seemed last time.

This statue is made of big and small shards of sheet glass and it appears that the statue is in motion. These pictures don't do it justice! But I hope you can get the idea of how totally rad it is!

And the next time you're in Athens...it's right next to the National Art Museum.

Greece was excellent! I love that amazing country.

I love that amazing country. So many beautiful things to see, so much scrumptious fresh food to eat. We visited Mykonos, Santorini and Athens on this trip. As I mentioned I was thrilled to visit my favorite jewelry store, Fetish Jewelry in Mykonos. The views in Santorini are beyond description.

We finally arrived in Mykonos, after several airports and hours of flying and it was worth it! The island is amazing. I've been here before, and it seems even better this time. Even though the town is a maze of streets and shops I was easily able to find my favorite jewelry shop, Fetish Jewelry (http://www.fetishjewelry.gr/) and found a new and awesome piece to add to my collection from their unique line. The new ring features rainbow obsidian in a silver setting. I'll take a picture of it when I get back so you can see it!

We will be here a few more days and then head to Santorini.

Artist to be hung on shark hooks

Alice Newstead is a former employee of the shop

A performance artist has had her skin pierced with shark hooks and been suspended from a shop ceiling as part of a campaign to end shark finning.

Alice Newstead has been hung from de-barbed hooks for 15 minutes in the window of the Lush cosmetics store in Regent Street, central London.

The stunt is designed to mimic the fate of sharks caught solely for their fins.

The process known as finning is where a fin is hacked off and the shark thrown back into the water to die.

Ms Newstead, who is a former employee of the London shop, was "hung" in the shop window at noon on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Lush said: "Alice's performance is very reminiscent of what happens to sharks when they are caught.

"When they are caught the sharks are pulled from the water, their fins are sliced off, and they are kicked back into the ocean, so they sink to the bottom and suffer a slow death.

"Fins are the most lucrative part of the shark, which explains the massive escalation in the numbers of sharks killed in the last few years."

The firm has also launched a new Shark Fin Soap - a blue soap made with seaweed and sea salt with a cardboard shark fin sticking out the top.

All funds from the sale of the soap will go to the wildlife conservation charity Sea Shepherd.

Consumers are also being urged to boycott restaurants that serve shark fin soup and not to use shark cartilage supplements, which are thought to improve bone health.

After more than 30 years of planning, 14 years of building and $10 billion later, the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest atom smasher, is due to start up on September 10. Scientists predict collisions of sub-atomic particles produced by the LHC will allow them to get closer than ever before to answering questions about the origins of the universe. Lisa Schlein reports for VOA from CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva.

LHC Project Leader, Lyn Evans, has been coddling this colossal machine from the start.

"It has been 14 years. I think this is really a very long time for any scientific project and, quite frankly, I'm glad to see the end," said Evans.

The end is actually the beginning. But, as Evans explains, the start of this grand voyage into the unknown will not begin by pulling a switch to get the machine working for the first time.

"There is not a big red button as many people think, that the thing switches on and results come spewing out," added Evans. "It is a complex operation and we start by trying to get a beam just to go around the ring once. And, if we can achieve that on the first day, I will be extremely happy."

The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, is the world's most powerful particle accelerator. The giant machine could revolutionize our understanding of the universe by recreating the conditions which were present less than a billionth of a second after the Big Bang.

The gigantic ring-shaped device is housed in a 27-kilometer tunnel, which straddles the Swiss-French border near Geneva.

The collider has massive detectors that fill cathedral-sized rooms at intervals along the ring. Some 6,000 super-conducting magnets guide the beams. Evans says 50,000 tons of equipment will have to be cooled down to temperatures that are colder than that of outer space.

He says protons are fed directly into the LHC ring via two injection lines, one for each beam. He says the first attempt to circulate two proton beams all the way around the ring will occur on September 10.

"When these beams collide, then, of course when two particles collide, then they produce energy, which can convert itself into mass and if you got high energy than you can produce heavy objects," said Evans.

It will take a couple of months to bring collisions up to the desired energy. When the LHC gets up to speed, the accelerated protons will travel with nearly the speed of light. The machine will produce about 800 million proton-proton collisions every second.

CERN theoretical physicist, John Ellis tells VOA people should think of the LHC as the world's most fantastic microscope. He says the LHC will be able to look ten times deeper inside the structure of matter than any accelerator or microscope that has been built before.

"And, you should also think of it as being the world's most fantastic telescope because it recreates in some sense the conditions that occurred very early in the history of the Big Bang," said Ellis. "Not right back at the beginning, but a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang. So, in addition to addressing really fundamental questions about the structure of matter, what it is made of, what holds it together, it is also going, I think give us insights into how the universe came to be the way that it is today."

Physicists believe the LHC will lead to the discovery of a new particle called the Higgs Boson, named after the British physicist Peter Higgs. The Higgs is often referred to as the missing link in the history of particle physics. It is thought to hold the answer to why sub-atomic particles have weight or mass.

Ellis says the LHC is capable of unlocking other issues of equal or greater scientific interest. He says his particular passion is to probe Dark Matter.

"Astronomers and cosmologists tell us that something like 80 percent of the matter in the universe is invisible, the so-called Dark Matter that nobody has ever seen. We know it is there because it exerts gravitational forces, but it does not shine, so presumably it is not made of the same stuff as regular matter," added Ellis. "To my mind it is amazing that here we are in the 21st century and we still do not know what most of the stuff in the universe is made of."

As CERN celebrates its achievement, some people are predicting the LHC will create a mammoth black hole that will swallow up the earth. Several lawsuits have been filed to stop the LHC from starting up.

Physicists call these doomsday scenarios ridiculous. They say cosmic rays have been bombarding the earth and triggering collisions similar to those planned for the collider, since the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

And, Physicists John Ellis and Lyn Evans note, so far, the earth has survived.

"There is absolutely no evidence that black holes are eating up planets thanks to these cosmic ray collisions. No black hole will swallow up the earth," continued Ellis.

"I do not expect to be swallowed up by," said Evans. "I think nobody in their right mind expects to be swallowed up by hypothetical black holes which are created in the LHC."

I purchased the Apex Digital Box from Best Buy and I am not loving the pixelated herky jerky picture. At least with the good old antenna it might have been fuzzy or staticy but at least there was some consistency there. I hate it when you're trying to hear something and it just freezes, and then after an unknown amount of time it might start again, and now you've missed the thing you wanted to know. It was also a total pain to set up. I'm pretty good with following directions but this was harder than it should have been. Check out the latest reviews before you purchase.

I'm already not a fan of this digital switch over, I don't know why we can't keep on with the way things were...you know, FREE television. So good luck with your digital switch over.

I'm a night owl. I get a second wind when the sun goes down and I do a lot of work between 10pm and 2am. Last night the TV was on while I was working and the infomercial for Wen (hair stuff) and Cindy Crawford's magic face stuff was on (they did a side by side and she hasn't aged in 14 years of seeing the French face doctor...who doesn't want that???). I was tempted to order them both, like really tempted...why is that? Is it that at 1am a person is more susceptible to the repetitive selling slogan or is it the celebrity endorsements? I mean if Melissa Gilbert loves it, I will love it...if Dorthy Hamill says it's good, well she's trustworthy and I should get it. I am fascinated by the "need" that Guthy Renker creates, and how well they do it. If only I could tap into that marketing genius.

But of course I held myself back from ordering and am just going to live with my shampooed hair and my regular Aveda face products. I might not look as good as Cindy Crawford, Melissa Gilbert or Valerie Bertinelli (what isn't she endorsing?), but there's always another chance for them to get me tonight.

I kind of miss Mary Carillo now that the Olympics have come to and end. Her "slice of life" reports made me laugh. I'm in a post Olympic funk I think. It was hard not to get caught up in all of the story lines of the Olympic hopefuls and now there are no stories to get lost in, no trimumphs to triumph, no feats to be in awe of.

I was inspired by the dedication and sheer force of will that the athletes demostrated. I wish the Olympics happened more often.

I guess it's time to get my nose back to the grindstone. Only 2 more years until the winter Olympics.

United States of America

Delegates from the major political parties are involved in the selection of candidates for President of the United States by such assemblies as a convention. Some of the officials involved in the process are called superdelegates.

Delegate is the title of a person elected to the United States House of Representatives to serve the interests of an organized United States territory, at present only overseas or the District of Columbia, but historically in most cases in a portion of North America as precursor to one or more of the present states of the union. Delegates have powers similar to that of Representatives, including the right to vote in committee, but have no right to take part in the floor votes in which the full house actually decides whether the proposal is carried. See: Delegate (United States Congress).

A similar mandate is held in a few cases under the style Resident commissioner.

Delegate is also the title given to individuals elected to the lower houses of the bicameral legislative bodies of the states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia (see House of Delegates).

Members of other parliamentary assemblies, such as the Continental Congress or the New York State Constitutional.

Members of a body charged with writing or revising a foundational or other basic governmental document (such as members of a constitutional convention are usually referred to as "delegates".

Democratic Party

The Democratic party of the United States of America uses pledged delegates and superdelegates. A candidate for the Democratic nominee must win a majority of combined delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention, to be held in Denver, Colorado in August 2008.

Pledged delegates are elected or chosen at the state or local level, with the understanding that they will support a particular candidate at the convention. Pledged delegates are however not actually bound to vote for that candidate, thus the candidates are allowed to periodically review the list of delegates and eliminate any of those they feel would not be supportive. Currently there are 3,253 pledged delegates.

Of the 4,047 total Democratic delegates, 794 are superdelegates, which are usually Democratic members of Congress, governors, former Presidents, and other party leaders. They are not required to indicate preference for a candidate.

The Democratic Party uses a proportional representation to determine how many delegates each candidate is awarded in each state. For example, a candidate who wins 40% of a state's vote in the primary election will win 40% of that state's delegates; however, a candidate must win at least 15% of the primary vote, or they win no delegates. If a candidate wins 14% of the primary election, they receive zero delegates. There is no process to win superdelegates, since they can vote for whomever they please. A candidate needs to win a simple majority of total delegates to earn the Democratic nomination. ^[1]

Republican Party

The Republican Party of the United States of America utilizes a similar system with slightly different terminology, employing pledged and unpledged delegates. Of the total 2,380 Republican delegates, 1,719 are pledged delegates, who as with the Democratic Party, are elected at the state or local level. To become the Republican Party nominee, the candidate must win a simple majority of 1,191 of the 2,380 total delegates at the Republican National Convention, held in Saint Paul, Minnesota in September 2008.

A majority of the unpledged delegates are elected much like the pledged delegates, and are likely to be committed to a specific candidate. Many of the other unpledged delegates automatically claim the delegate status either by virtue of their position as a party chair or national party committee person. This group is known as unpledged RNC member delegates.

The process by which delegates are awarded to a candidate will vary from state to state. Many states use a winner-take-all system, where popular vote determines the winning candidate for that state, while a few other use a proportional representation. While the Republican National Committee does not require a 15% minimum threshold, individual state parties may however impart such a threshold.

The unpledged RNC member delegates are free to vote for any candidate and are not bound by the electoral votes of their state. The majority of the unpledged delegates (those who are elected or chosen) are technically free to vote for any candidate; however they are likely to be committed to one specifically. ^[2]

Alex is rad, and not just because we share the same awesome hair styling genius Susan (of Rock, Paper, Scissors) but she also makes totally rad paper goods...and I LOVE paper!!!

Cecily Ink, Alex's gorgeous stationary and other paper awesomeness is worth checking out. Her booth was really awesome, and really big! She was a blast to talk to and her designs reflect her hip, cool and fun personality.

She also has a blog, check it out. And she posted about the Seattle Gift Show and mentioned me (how nice) and has some close up pictures of my pendants on the table (don't know why I didn't think of doing that!).

Portland is the best place. Full of great people and smart, sassy, creative entrepreneurs.

I knew Amy Wing of Amy Wing Designs before this show -- her gorgeous necklaces and earrings are at Cheeky B and she spends some time at the Paper Zone (which I love, love, love). I talked with Amy a little bit before the show on one of our meetings at the Paper Zone. She was very insightful and full of positive energy and I was excited to see her booth and to get a chance to know her better.
I already knew that Amy was pretty awesome, and it turns out my mom knows Amy's husband (from our small town in California -- my mom worked with his parents)...how weird is that? So Amy and I are coincidental cousins I decided. Amy's gorgeous work is well worth a look so check out her website: www.amywing.com

Amy was sharing her booth with Rachael Starkweather who is The Button Girl, she makes the most fun buttons. I've met Rachael before, she's usually making buttons and selling them by the boat loads to adoring fans. It was great to spend some time with her and get to know her for real.

They were both so much fun! I loved hanging out with them and having a few laughs and some yummy crepes...Gooooood times.

Erin the Original Bath Gal makes the most scrumptious body treats. I absolutely adored her lotions. Every time I put some on my hands and arms were so soft and stayed that way without being greasy. Back in the handmade section we had a little time on our hands and I got to meet some new friends.

In the booth next to me was P. Tracey Ludwin from Portland, OR. She had awesome vintage jewelery. I really loved the vintage buttons that she turned into rings. They were super cute. Next to Tracey was Tonya Gray of Oh My Stars. I saw her at the Portland Gift Show and was inspired by her booth design. It was fun to get to tell her that and chat about display ideas.

Agnes of Boutique Unlimited in San Jose and her sister were a lot of fun. She was full of great advice and helpful information as well as sharing treats like roasted chestnuts and milky way bars! Thanks Agnes. She was selling incredible hand carved wooden handbags that were super cool and very high end.

I had no idea about all the strict rules for display either. So if you're a newbie to big trade shows make sure you read all the fine print about combustible fabric and other fire regulations!

seattle gift show - the show part 1

The Seattle Gift show was quite an experience. It was my first wholesale trade show and I learned a lot. I made some great new friends and made a few promising connections as well. We were located in the "handmade" section, which was in the North Hall, way, way, way back there.

Turns out I was a bit optimistic in my projections for the show. Here is some insight into my logic. I was told there would be 10,000 retailers attending. Based on those numbers I thought I'd be lucky if a third owned boutiques, and of those 3,000 I'd be lucky if 100 of them were interested in my awesome glass pendants. So, I expected to meet 25 interested retailer/buyers per day and of those 25 I thought I might get 10 purchases of around 10 pendants for their stores. Roughly a 100 contacts total and 40-50 orders written with a total of 100 pendants being ordered/sold per day. Boy was that way off the mark. The traffic was much less than I had expected in the Handmade area and apparently the summer show is much slower than the February show.

For those of you who are contemplating jumping up to the wholesale trade show level, consider the investment carefully. As I said, this was my first show, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I'm not sure that I would consider it a "success" (despite being told otherwise) when I take into account all that went into it.

I had a few orders from awesome people (I'll be posting those soon) and one really, really awesome order. So it wasn't a bust, but it wasn't a boon either! Feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like some specifics, I'm be happy to share.

Thanks to everyone for your support and well wishes. I was overwhelmed by all of your support via phone calls, emails and texts. Like I said earlier, I met a lot of really awesome people, both exhibitors and retailer/buyers, so it was a really good and valuable experience as I grow the glass empire! I'm happy to be home now and so happy to take a little break.

Have you heard of Barolo? The Italian Ristorante in Seattle? If you haven't been there, I'd suggest going way out of your way to get there and experience what is quite possibly the very best food I've ever had. Ever.

Now, I'm no foodie, but I know what I like and I really, really liked the food at Barolo. We loved Barolo so much that we told absolutely everyone who looked remotely like they ate food to go there. We fell in love with the Spaghetti con Polpa di Granchio (Spaghetti with fresh Dungeness crab meat, organic cherry tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil white wine and garlic) and had it each time we visited. They are also known for their Cuore di Romana grigliata (Grilled romaine heart with caesar dressing, shaved reggiano). I've never had grilled lettuce before and it was soooo good, the dressing was beyond perfection.

We went back a few times over the 5 days we were in Seattle. Each time we were treated to awesome service by Lauren over on the bar side. She added so much to the experience that we always made sure we sat in her section, she is genuine and made everything more enjoyable and we felt like we were part of the family. Everything she recommended was great (although I bet everything on the menu is to die for) and Jason, the manager, treated us so well and introduced me to the first gnocchi that I've ever liked, (Gnocchi al Fagiano -- House made gnocchi with braised pheasant) in fact, I usually really don't care for gnocchi, but of course it was soooo delicious and I'd order it there again.

A big thanks to Lauren and Jason who made the great food even better by making us feel at home and well cared for, which after a long day at the gift show was just what we needed.

Mmm. I wish Seattle was closer, I'd go there right now!

Well for those of you who are glued to your computer screen checking my blog and sending me emails about what is now being called "MOUSE WATCH 2008" the threat level: "mouse" has officially been upgraded to "mice" and so it was time to call the professionals. There are a ton of places that do exterminating, so I called a few and waited for some call backs.

I'm not sure if I can convey how elated I was when Dana Stensrud from Paramount Pest Control, Inc. called back and then showed up (in record time) and set a bunch of traps and put out some bait and assuaged my deep fear that the mice really want to eat my eyes out (especially while I'm sleeping)! Dana was awesome and if any of the rest of you Portlanders (or Oregonians and SW Washingtonians) have a pest problem give him a call (503) 288-7375 or 800-452-7243.

He checked around and found some "evidence" of activity under the stove (who knew that bottom drawer came all the way out -- eww, dust bunny extravaganza under there) and then he showed me the biggest hugest hole in the bottom of my gas fireplace that leads to the crawl space under my house. I don't have time to get into my fear of the crawlspace...but just know that it's there. And so, yes, the mother-load of a mouse super highway was found -- let's hope it's the ONLY highway into the house.

So, now it's just waiting for the mice to get caught. Ugh. I hate to be so extreme, and I hate spending money on stupid mouse exterminating, but it had to be done.

Dana also feels that it's unlikely I'll catch the plague, phew! That's all for now...I'll let you know how it goes. And no, this is not a picture of my actual mouse, mine looks similar and much more menacing. Ok, back to work!!!

The Seattle Gift Show begins this Friday (for me). I'll be heading up to Seattle early Friday morning to set up my booth, and then sell, sell, sell!

I'll keep you posted on the pre-during-and-post tidbits. I'll take lots of pictures.

This will be my first big trade show and I'm really excited. So far I feel like I'm pretty well prepared. I asked questions, did research, asked some more questions and so on. I feel like I've anticipated most of the issues, but I'm sure a few curve balls will come up...but I'm ready!

I've also created a wholesale line. Very exciting stuff. I'll post the wholesale information as soon as I can.

I'm hoping to do a lot of business and make a lot of awesome connections. So if you're in Seattle August 15-20th -- let me know so we can hook up!

tip tuesday - one notebook

This is my number one organizational tip/secret. Are you ready for this one? It's one notebook.

Yes, that's right, I said it. One notebook. Imagine if you will a place that everything that gets jotted down gets jotted in one place. The kind of notebook is just as important as only using one. It has to be something you like and something you can keep with you.

I use the Moleskin Weekly Pocket Planner, I take notes, draw pictures, make plans, make lists, write down ideas, everything all in one notebook.

Now, what you don't know about me is that I LOVE notebooks. I love paper of all kinds. I have like a zillion notebooks and journals, and other compiled paper products. I also LOVE organization. Like obsessive organization, and I used to use several - one for creative ideas, one for improv, one for art, one for glass, one for business ideas - you get the idea, but I sometimes didn't have the one I wanted when I needed it and so I would cross mingle things and then when I wanted to find that tidbit of genius it took ages to find it -- or worse yet, I couldn't find it or even worse than that -- deadlines, phone numbers and other really important stuff sometimes (rarely -- but still) fell through the cracks. But with my new improved one notebook for all those things that get jotted, I'm on top of it and I know that if I wrote it down, it's in there.

So give it a try, for those of you I've converted to the one notebook system, please feel free to leave your comment. And if you try it, tell me how you like it!

Asking for help is rad. I have the best friends and supporters who are always offering to help. I am a helper of friends and am always happy to receive help as well. Sometimes the hardest part is finding things that can be done that are helpful and something that the helpee likes to do.

Tonight my dear friends Courtney and Ben came over and helped me name all of the 31 pieces of art for the thirty one show. It was like doing improv associations (oh man I miss improv). So, one more big task done in no time and virtually painless.

So, for those of you out there building empires, make sure you put the word out when you need some help...you're sure to find someone who would love to lend a hand ... and it's always so much more fun.

Thanks again Ben and Courtney! As you can see from their blogs they were the perfect pair to help with this project.

Ok, I'm ready to pledge that I will NEVER again use or accept a plastic shopping bag. I was at a shop today and the gentleman in front of me bought two items that were of course put in a plastic bag and he went on his merry way. I didn't have my enviorsax with me, but I had few enough items that I could carry them, so I did. And now I promise to never, ever, ever again get another bag under any circumstance. Please join me and make a pledge...no more plastic shopping bags!

Next on the list will be plastic bottles...just got to figure out how to replace my Crystal Geyser Sparkling Mineral Water for something in a glass bottle.

Sometimes it's a good idea to just WALK AWAY! I'm working on the last few pieces for the Thirty One show and I am starting to force it a little bit. I also have the large 20x20 piece to finish. I decided to walk away today, and work on some other stuff to give myself some time to take a breath so I can come back refreshed and ready to rock it. I'm on the home stretch.

there's a mouse in my house

There might be TWO actually...if there are more than two I'm going to totally freak out! This little mouse moves quick, I can only just barely glimpse it out of the corner of my eye as it streaks around the kitchen. I can hear it though....It was in my oven -- having a little mouse party in there.

I'm totally terrified of it. Totally T-E-R-R-I-F-I-E-D!

Where does the completely irrational fear of mice come from?

The first time it charged me (or ran by me, depends on your point of view) it had a look of "I want to eat your eyeballs" in it's eyes -- or possibly "Aaaaaaaah, SUPER HUGE MONSTER ... RUN AWAY!!!!". It was hard to tell it all happened so fast.

So, now I'm off to bed, where I'm thinking of taping off the cracks in the door so I can sleep without the fear of my eyeballs being eaten out by the mouse in the house.

Makes me wish I had a cat...almost.

I was stumbling around the internet and I found this awesome page by Greenpeace. It shows the trash vortex in the Pacific Ocean. Whoa. The “Eastern Garbage Patch”

The North Pacific sub-tropical gyre covers a large area of the Pacific in which the water circulates clockwise in a slow spiral. Winds are light. The currents tend to force any floating material into the low energy central area of the gyre. There are few islands on which the floating material can beach. So it stays there in the gyre, in astounding quantities estimated at six kilos of plastic for every kilo of naturally occurring plankton. The equivalent of an area the size of Texas swirling slowly around like a clock. This gyre has also been dubbed “the Asian Trash Trail” the “Trash Vortex” or the “Eastern Garbage Patch”.

This perhaps wouldn’t be too much of a problem if the plastic had no ill effects. The larger items, however, are consumed by seabirds and other animals which mistake them for prey. Many seabirds and their chicks have been found dead, their stomachs filled with medium sized plastic items such as bottle tops, lighters and balloons. A turtle found dead in Hawaii had over a thousand pieces of plastic in its stomach and intestines. It has been estimated that over a million sea-birds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles are killed each year by ingestion of plastics or entanglement.

Animals can become entangled in discarded netting and line. Even tiny jelly-fish like creatures become entangled in lengths of plastic filament, or eat the small plastic particles floating in the water.

Chemical sponge

There is a sinister twist to all this as well. The plastics can act as a sort of “chemical sponge”. They can concentrate many of the most damaging of the pollutants found in the worlds oceans: the persistent organic pollutants (POPs). So any animal eating these pieces of plastic debris will also be taking in highly toxic pollutants.

The North Pacific gyre is one of five major ocean gyres and it is possible that this Trash Vortex problem is one which is present in other oceans as well. The Sargasso Sea is a well known slow circulation area in the Atlantic, and research there has also demonstrated high concentrations of plastic particles present in the water.

My friend Courtney came over the other day and picked this awesome pendant out of a bunch of new ones hot off the presses...I just finished it off and it's ready to go. I really love this one, as I do so many of them. There's a depth just beneath the surface that I can get lost in for hours.

I've been working bigger after the feedback from the the Los Angeles trip. This one is 2" wide and 1 1/2" long. Not to worry, I'll still make the other sizes...but the big ones are such fun!

Do you know where your food comes from my friends? I just watched another illuminating documentary about food, this one specifically about corn (it looks like the corn on the cob you eat, but it's non-edible), how it's produced, and more importantly where it goes. The documentary is called King Corn. Watch the trailer:

I know there's been a lot of talk about eating organics and cutting out high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats, and with the rising cost of food (and everything else) it's getting harder and harder to make those good choices, but I urge to to feed yourself and your loved ones well. tip tuesday - learn how to listen

For some of us listening comes naturally. For others it's a skill that can be learned.

Listening is underrated and very powerful. It requires a bit of self control, and a dash of stillness. To be fully present and engaged in all of your interactions is ideal and achievable with practice so be aware of your next opportunity to take the focus off of yourself and place it exclusively on the person you're talking with. You can learn a lot about others by listening with your whole self, you can learn a lot about yourself too.

When you learn to listen better, you can find the stillness that allows you to hear those opportunities that cross your path everyday.

Nathan is a good friend and an amazing glass artist.

I have always been in awe of his work and his latest show was totally inspiring. Not only does he work at Bullseye as an instructor full time, but he also managed to create another impressive body of work.

What you can't see in the photos and what is so impressive when you see the work is the depth of pieces, some are more than an inch thick. The art that he creates is innovative and very different from any work in glass that I've seen. I'm looking forward to what he does next.

One of my favorite books is by Don Miguel Ruiz. If you haven't read The Four Agreements it's worth a look, and if you've read it or have it, pick it up and give it a fresh look.

Whoa! Summer is here, and then some. It's very hot here...I dare say SCORCHING hot, (100 here in Portland!) and it's hard to do anything...except go to the movies.

Please save yourself and DO NOT go and see Wanted. It's pretty awful. Yes, there was air conditioning thankfully, and James McAvoy is very easy on the eyes, but SAVE YOURSELF and go and see some other summer flick.

I'd tell you why it was so bad...but I don't want to spoil it for those of you who, despite my warning, will go and see it anyway! ;)

tip tuesday - the art of following up

Following up or following through is one of the most important things a person can do. Not only is it best practices for business, but it's a very wise idea. I have found that follow through is where most people kind of drop the ball.

Whether you send thank you's, personal notes or just a good old fashioned email -- the most important part is that you DO IT. So if you're sitting on a stack of contacts from your last event or if a friend connected you with another friend make sure you do your part and follow up.

This is the way the world works. Get on board and follow up!

There are a ton of articles on the subject of following up, so if you're still at a loss, just Google "tips on following up"!

the spider in my machine

There's a spider in my mac. I just flipped my little baby open and a spider scurried inside -- I didn't know it was a spider at first. I saw something move and then as I looked closer it had left a web that it had been working on in the crevice where the screen and the keyboard meet.

So do I take it to a genius for spider removal? Can you just see it?

Me: Hi.

Genius: How can I help you.

Me: Uhm, there seems to be a spider in my laptop.
Can you open it up and get the little spider out?

Genius: ...

I'm afraid it's going to leap out of my laptop and attack me. I think they call that Arachnophobia...or macaracnophobia.

I definitely have a case of the heebejeebies.

GAS reflections

The first person I ran into was Steve Klein. It's funny that I just posted about mentors because he's definitely a mentor of mine.

Steve is so inspiring. He graduated from college in 1969 with a degree in Theater and then worked a "real" job for many, many years. In 1996 he went to Pilchuck, and the rest is history! I always love seeing him. He has always encouraged me to follow my heart and I love that about him!

The GAS conference was awesome. I met a lot of new people and learned a few things, got some new toys to play with and am ready to rock it!

The Klaus Moje exhibit at the Portland Art Museum was amazing. He is also a very inspirational man. If you've never seen his work, and you're in Portland, make sure you see it.

So much went on this weekend. I'll have to do a few more posts to cover it all.

I also love SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), I volunteered with SMART last year and I had such a great time. I was kind of a floater, so I got to read with a lot of students. It was awesome. If you love to read, and you like kids...SMART rocks.

SMART MISSION: To engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with K-3 children who need literacy support.

Participating children also receive new books each month to keep and read with their families.

Exciting news! Kait a dear friend of mine, gave one of my pendants to a friend of hers Elenie a birthday gift. Lucky for me, she really liked it and luckier still, it just so happens that Elenie works on the FX show Nip/Tuck and invited me down to sell my work on the set. So today was the big day and I took my pendants down and set up shop.

We had a great time. The crew and cast and everyone that came by were the most excellent people. Very supportive and interested in the kilnformed glass. Roma Maffia dropped by early and chose a few, one of which she wore immediately -- and that little beauty made it on Nip/Tuck! Yes, that's right, she got to wear it in the scene she was shooting, so one of these days you'll be seeing a Laura James Designs original adorning Dr. Liz Cruz.

Roma Maffia is totally rad! She is down to earth, funny and beautiful! Here's a picture of us featuring "the" pendant that will be on the show.

Thanks again Elenie, and everyone else on Nip/Tuck and the other wonderful people from around the Paramount stages that came by. You all made it a fun and incredible day to remember!

tip tuesday - thank you's

I am a thank you note kind of person. My mom made my brother and I send thank you notes when we were kids. Of course back then I thought it was really dumb, but now I get it.

So fill that craving by sending a note. It's a great follow up opportunity. Sending an email is great, but a card in the mail is so much fun to receive.

Thank you notes have come a long way. Find some thank you notes that match your style and stamp all the envelopes and keep them handy. You can also keep some blank note cards around for those all purpose occasions.

Have you heard of Enviorsax? So we all know that plastic bags are bad and that paper bags are better but...having your own bag is the best.
